The University of Tokyo Wins the 2011 Marketing Competition Japan

The University of Tokyo Team won the competition with their "Be Yourself to be a Better Mother" campaign.

The 2011 marketing Competition Japan was successfully held on December 17th at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies. The competition was the first all-English business & social media related competition and was comprised of 8 finalist teams who presented their plans before international and Japanese judges. After a fierce competition, the top prize was claimed by the team of the University of Tokyo who came up with the “be Yourself to be a Better Mother” campaign. The 2nd prize went to Kansai University and, the host team, Kobe City University of Foreign Studies won the 3rd prize.

This year’s challenge was to create an effective marketing plan for B-Three stretch pants by using traditional media and popular social media tools such as Twitter, Youtube and Mixi. A total of 24 teams representing 12 different universities submitted their proposals during the first round of the competition which ended on November 16th. Dentsu Marketing Insights screened all of the proposals and determined the teams to present in the finals that took place in Kobe.

The team of Kansai University claimed the 2nd prize with the "You are the Best Model" theme.

The competition aims to teach business, social media and English presentation skills through task based learning to help raise more competent students in Japan. This event was organized by Marketing Competition Japan Committee at Kobe City University of Foreign studies with support from Value Planning Inc., Dentsu Marketing Insights Inc., ANA, Cambridge University Press and Kobe City University of Foreign Studies. 5: What kind of marketing plan am I going to prepare?A very simple plan that does not require any previous knowledge of marketing. You only have to answer these 4 questions:

  • Who are the most likely purchasers of B-Three pants?
  • What is the best advertising message?
  • What kind of advertising and promotion should B-Three use?
  • How should B-Three use new social media channels (e.g. Twitter, Mixi, Youtube, etc.) to become more popular and increase its sales?

6: What if I don’t have any previous knowledge of marketing ?

  • Previous marketing knowledge is not essential because participants will only answer four basic questions.
  • Participants are also allowed to get help from their teachers or friends.

7: What if I have a bad English accent or limited English skills?

  • Participants are not expected to speak perfect English.
  • English pronunciation or English fluency will not be evaluated in the competition.

8: What is the evaluation criteria?

  • Presentation Quality- 50 Points (Confidence: 20 points, Passion: 10 points, Organization: and Clarity 10 points, Q&A Performance: 10 points )
  • Creativity and originality- 30 points
  • Feasibility -20 points

9: Can foreign students who are registered at Japanese universities also participate?

  • Yes.
